ABOUT UPAKO CENTER

 

The UPAKO CENTRE is a community-based organization that was established in 2005 by Pastor Francis Odhiambo in conjunction with theKawangware community members. The name of the organization "Upako"is a Swahili word which means "Anointing."

The organization is licensed to operate in the Dagoretti division, Nairobi west district, Nairobi Kenya. The office is situated in Kawangware; a low earner suburb residential area located on southwest side of Nairobi city.

The community has an approximate population of 350,000. Kawangware area is a host to so many social problems that basically reflect the situation in the entire division. The water and sewerage system are poor, housing is inadequate and inappropriate. HIV/aids prevalence is high and so is the insecurity. School dropout rate and the number of children dropping out of homes to join street families are alarming. Poverty and unemployment rate among the area inhabitants cannot go unnoticed.

For those who are lucky to get some jobs, which in most cases are intensive manual labor jobs, the wages are diminutive and working conditions, so unfair.

Averagely the inhabitants of kawangware earn approximately KSH 3000 per month.

In the middle of all these compounding social problems are widows, OVCs and youth who bare the painful brand of the situation. They resort to desperate and detrimental means of survival such as criminal acts, drug use, and sexual immorality.

The Upako Centre basically arouse to satisfy the needs of the Kawangware people through inspiration by Pastor Francis.
